This is how to use your Patina

"Well-balanced proportions, reliance on materials, and the use of a classic typology that most people have a positive association with — this is the simple foundation that paved the way for the Patina oil lamp family". That’s how the designer duo Broberg & Ridderstråle describe their Patina oil lamps.

The lamp is made of steel and is available powder-coated in white, grey, black, and blue, as well as with a copper finish. The accompanying glass is clear, but frosted glass can be purchased separately. The copper lamp develops a beautiful patina over time if not polished. This is the original version and the inspiration behind the name Patina.

Below is a short guide on how to handle your Patina lamp before first use and beyond.

1. Make sure the container is well filled before first use. However, do not fill it all the way to the top, as there is a risk of overflow when you screw on the burner. We recommend high-quality lamp oil from brands like Kemetyl and Nitor.

2. Screw on the burner and let it soak for about 30 minutes. Check that the top has become damp.

3. For an even and steady flame, make sure the wick is level with the edge of the burner. Trim with scissors if needed.

4. When lighting the wick, only 1–2 mm of the wick should be visible above the edge of the burner. Never raise the wick higher than that, as it will cause the wick itself to burn instead of just the oil.

Also, make sure the container never runs completely dry so that the wick doesn’t dry out. If that happens, the wick itself will burn, and you may need to replace it. If you follow these instructions properly, you should never have to change your wick.

Finally, keep in mind that the glass becomes very hot when the lamp is lit. The easiest way to extinguish your Patina lamp is by blowing out the flame. Alternatively, you can turn down the wick until the flame goes out.
