Meet Lovisa Wattman
We paid a visit to Lovisa Wattman to get an inside look at how her new product, Oopus, came to life. Read the full interview here!
Welcome to the Klong family, Lovisa! How has it been working with us for the first time?
Patience is a good word – there has been both time and willingness to make several iterations to reach the desired result in production. At Klong, there is also the bravery that comes with patience: the confidence to trust the product’s original idea and to go beyond trends to create designs that you genuinely want to see and use.
How would you describe yourself as a designer?
I appreciate when design is subtle and durable. If that can describe my way of working, it is that I look for forms that are self-evident, functional, and made from materials that can be used for a long time.
Where did you find the inspiration for Oopus, and how did the product come to life?
It started with the tape holder; the idea process for it is old and somewhat vague. I usually start from the combination of manufacturing and purpose (what the product should do and for whom), but here it began more as a play with form and the discovery that it could serve a function.
That Oopus started as a playful experiment fits perfectly, since one of its functions is to act as a cheerful distraction on the desk – like an “executive toy”.
How did you come up with the name Oopus?
It comes from Latin, like several of Klong’s product names. Opus means work, and with O as a prefix it becomes reversed – if play is the opposite of work – but still sounds like work. And it looks nice too.
Were there any particular materials or techniques that were especially important in creating Oopus?
Not really – the forms need to be cast, and metal works perfectly for the functions, with polished stainless steel.
What feeling do you want Oopus to convey to our customers when they use it?
Touching it and setting it in motion – something you want to handle and play with. The products are like jewelry for the desk, home office, or workspace, and should be items you want to keep visible and use.
How does Oopus differ from previous products you have created?
The idea of decorating, playing, and standing out is not my usual starting point. Even if I want things to have a harmonious beauty, “decorating” is not my first word – but here it is at the center.
Which of the three parts is your favorite, and why?
It’s the tape holder, since it is the starting point, the most innovative piece. A special thanks to the Klong team for their patience in solving all the details, which hopefully now go unnoticed because they are cleverly hidden in the form.
